Why food cans are coated with tin and not with zinc?

Food cans are coated with tin instead of zinc because:

  • Better Protection: Tin (рдЯрд┐рди) resists rust (рдЬрдВрдЧ) better in the acidic (рдЕрдореНрд▓реАрдп) environment of food. Zinc (рдЬрд╕реНрддрд╛) can react with the food and might not protect as well.
  • Safety: Tin is safer for food because zinc can sometimes leach (рд░рд┐рд╕рд╛рд╡) into it.
  • Smooth Finish: Tin gives a nice, smooth (рдореБрд▓рд╛рдпрдо) surface that is better for handling and looks nicer.
  • Overall Performance: Tin works better for keeping food fresh and preventing spoilage (рдЦрд░рд╛рдмреА), even though it might cost a bit more than zinc.
